Morton County War Dead Monument
Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
Established in 1955, the Morton County War Dead Memorial pays tribute to service members from Morton County who sacrificed their lives in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terrorism. The memorial, located outside the Morton County Courthouse, lists the names of the fallen, grouped by the conflict in which they served. Over time, exposure to the elements has led to structural deterioration, and recent research has identified additional service members not yet honored on the monument
Renewal Initiative: Morton County Memorial Plaza
In response to these concerns, the Morton County Commission initiated a renewal project in 2021. A nine-member War Dead Monument Committee was established to develop a final design, fundraising strategy, and oversee construction and dedication of the new monument.
After extensive community engagement and collaboration with local American Legion posts, the committee has finalized a design concept for the renewed monument, now referred to as the Morton County Memorial Plaza. This design aims to honor the service and sacrifice of fallen service members from communities across Morton County.

Public Input Meetings
Morton County invited community members to review and comment on the finalized design concept. Four public input meetings were scheduled across the region:
-
May 7 – New Salem
-
May 12 – Flasher
-
May 13 – Hebron
-
May 19 – Mandan
Each session included a brief background on the project's progression, a detailed presentation of the monument concept by the architectural team, and an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and provide feedback. Click HERE to watch the complete video of the Mandan input meeting.
Design Concepts
Two initial design concepts were presented to the public:
-
Ellipse Concept: A design featuring a curved layout symbolizing unity and continuity.
-
Zig-Zag Concept: A design inspired by the existing monument's form, representing the complex path of service and sacrifice.
Community feedback from these concepts has been instrumental in shaping the final design of the Morton County Memorial Plaza.
Committee and Meeting Information
The War Dead Monument Committee continues to oversee the project's development. Meeting agendas and minutes are available for public review:
