Proposed Morton County Historic Preservation Commission Information Page

Morton County is exploring the creation of a Historic Preservation Commission and a local historic preservation program in partnership with the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

The proposed commission would help identify and document places that reflect Morton County’s history, including historic buildings and structures, archaeological and cultural resources, rural landscapes, community landmarks, scenic areas, and transportation corridors.

This effort is part of the process of seeking recognition through the Certified Local Government program, a partnership among local, state, and federal governments. Participation could provide Morton County with access to preservation expertise, technical assistance, and competitive grant opportunities.

No final program has been established. Morton County is gathering public input as the proposed commission, ordinance, responsibilities, and approach are developed. Residents, property owners, community organizations, historians, preservation professionals, and other interested individuals are encouraged to participate.
