When texting 911:

  • Enter “911” in the recipient field

  • Provide your exact location first

What to Expect When You Call

When you call 911, you will first be asked for your location. Providing accurate location information allows responders to be dispatched as quickly as possible.

You may also be asked:

  • What is happening

  • Whether anyone is injured

  • If there are any immediate safety concerns

Remain on the line until the dispatcher advises you that it is appropriate to disconnect.

Location Information

While technology assists in identifying caller location, it may not always be exact, particularly in rural areas or large buildings.

If you do not know your address, be prepared to provide:

  • A nearby intersection or landmark

  • A highway number and mile marker

  • Direction and distance from a known location

Clear and accurate location information helps reduce response time.
