Burn Restrictions in Effect from 8/13/2026-12/31/2026

The Morton County Commission approved the continuation of the Fire Emergency and Burn Ban during its August 13, 2026, meeting. The proclamation remains in effect immediately and is scheduled to continue through December 31, 2026, unless rescinded earlier by the Morton County Commission based on changing drought conditions and recommendations from the Morton County Fire Chiefs. The burn ban remains necessary due to ongoing dry weather, dry vegetation, and the continued risk of rapidly spreading fires.

The burn ban prohibits open burning, including:

  • Campfires
  • Controlled burns
  • Burning of wood piles, tree piles, tumbleweeds, and similar materials
  • Cropland/agricultural burning
  • Outdoor fireplaces and chimineas
  • Fireworks
  • Charcoal grills and smokers
  • Wood-fired grills and smokers
  • Outdoor welding and hot work

Permitted devices include gas grills, gas patio fireplaces, and gas camp stoves only when they are used on a hard, non-combustible surface, are at least 15 feet from vegetation, and have an extinguisher or water source readily available.

Help Prevent Wildfires

Everyone can help reduce the risk of accidental fires by:

  • Making sure trailer safety chains are not dragging.
  • Avoiding parking or driving on dry grass or vegetation.
  • Using extra caution with any activity that could produce sparks.

Enforcement

Violations of the Fire Emergency and Burn Ban are a Class B Misdemeanor under North Dakota Century Code 37-17.1-10.1 and may result in penalties of up to 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine.

If you have questions about permitted activities during the Fire Emergency and Burn Ban, contact Morton County Emergency Management or your local fire department.
